At Black Iron Boerboels, we are serious advocates of comprehensive Boerboel health testing and responsible breeding practices. Every dog considered for our breeding program is evaluated with the long-term health, structure, and temperament of the Boerboel breed in mind. At a minimum, our breeding animals undergo health testing and hold FCI Hip, FCI Elbow, OFA Cardiac, and OFA Patella certifications prior to breeding.

A Boerboel may appear to be a perfect picture of health, but appearance alone cannot tell a breeder everything that may be happening beneath the surface. Formal health screening provides valuable information that cannot always be determined simply by observing how a dog looks, moves, or behaves.

For example, we have seen Boerboels with significant hip problems show virtually no outward signs of dysplasia because the breed’s substantial muscle mass can compensate for structural weaknesses. Similarly, a dog with a serious cardiac issue may still appear energetic, athletic, and capable of running with impressive stamina. This is exactly why health testing Boerboels before breeding is so important.

A dog appearing healthy does not automatically mean that the dog should be bred. Responsible Boerboel breeding requires looking beyond appearance and evaluating the health information available for each potential sire and dam. Hip and elbow testing, cardiac screening, patella evaluations, and genetic testing can help breeders make more informed decisions when planning future generations.

Genetic Testing for Boerboels

Boerboel genetic testing is another important part of a responsible breeding program. Genetic screening can help determine whether a dog is clear of, affected by, or a carrier of certain known hereditary conditions. Most important of all is Boerboel temperament and mental stability. Physical health, impressive structure, pedigree, and appraisal results are valuable, but none of those qualities can compensate for an unstable temperament.

The Boerboel was developed to be a powerful, intelligent, confident guardian that could also live closely with its family. A well-bred Boerboel should therefore demonstrate the temperament and mental stability appropriate for the breed.

For us, responsible breeding means evaluating the whole Boerboel—health, genetics, structure, temperament, pedigree, and overall quality. Our goal is not simply to produce Boerboel puppies, but to make thoughtful breeding decisions that contribute positively to the health and preservation of the South African Boerboel for future generations.
